- Replace the Tom Tom Battery
Tom Tom said that
batteries from my Tom Tom One XL GPS weren't available anywhere, refused
to sell me a replacement and instead offered me a discount on a new
unit. I asked them, "Are you telling me that your GPS devices should be
thrown away when the battery goes bad?" Then, I found sources for the
battery and the replacement lasted no longer than the original. Being an
experienced electronics technician, I found the a great solution next time
I replaced the battery and will share with you here. This replacement
technique should only be attempted by someone who is experienced in basic
electronics and has a soldering iron that it made to work on delicate
printed circuit boards. These instructions are quite loose, and if you
feel the least uncomfortable following them, don't try it. shorting out
the old battery or the new one could cause it to blow up in your face, so
it's not worth trying it unless you're confident. In any case, wear safety
goggles. First, order a Motorola BP6X battery. I got mine from BTO, Inc.,
at Amazon.com. It is like the one in my Motorola Droid One. Also listed
for Motorola OEM BP6X BATTERY FOR DROID A855 A955 PRO A957 CLIQ XT MB200
MB501. It was $5.92 including shipping. Remove the back off your Tom Tom,
and remove the old battery from the back of the case. Save the
double-sided sticker that holds it in. Remove the wire and connector off
of the old battery. Solder the wire on to the new battery. Red to
positive, Black to negative Yellow to the terminal next to negative. Don't
connect any wire to the battery terminal next to the positive. If
necessary, use an electronics wire cutter to cut any plastic tabs that may
be in the way so that the larger battery will fit. Put it all back
together. I used the old 1-1/2 year old batter from my Droid, when I
replaced it. My old Droid battery, fully charged lasted 2 hours and 45
minutes in the Tom Tom One XL. A brand new BP6X would obviously last
longer.
